Motorcycles in Iraq

Phil, Don’t know if I mentioned it at our last meeting, but I have a brother who is serving in Baghdad. He’s a USN, Supply Corps LT. However this ain’t about him.

He found out that an old friend of mine ex-Army Ranger type who served in Vietnam and went on to retire from the Greensboro, NC Police Department is currently in Iraq as part of the mission to train Iraq police force. We just started communicating again after a long time. It turns out he is a Harley rider from way back and got a kick out of the website when I mentioned it to him.

He sent the attached photos from Iraq with descriptions below. I think folks would get a kick out of the shots. Heck you might even want you assign him as Biker eNews’ “War Correspondent to Iraq.” Al is in the first and last photo.

Ride Safe, Gary

Subject: bikes in Iraq

Gary,

I thought that you may enjoy these. The first one is one of my favorites. This bike was in the market in Sulaymaniyah and is classic Iraqi.. The second was obviously a police Honda also in Sulaymaniyah. The third is a classy ride in Sulay as well and the last is me on a police bike in Mosul.

Somewhere I also have a photo of a "Tonda" which is an Iranian "knock-off" of a Honda. Copyrights and trade names mean nothing here. Most of the bikes are knock-offs from Turkey, Iran or Russia. We also have "Crust" toothpaste, "Nicecafe" coffee as well as "Tonda."

They love to reproduce Harley items here as well. A "Harley" belt and silver buckle here goes for about $3.50 and T-shirts with the Harley logo go for about $10.00

Share these with your biker buds.

Al
