El Nino 1998
Boulder Creek Fire personnel built this bridge over a creek that washed out China Grade, cutting off the entire area. The other end of the road had been blocked by multiple mud slides. The bridge was designed by Batt. Chief Jack Kunz. It was built in driving rain after PG&E placed two telephone poles across the gap. All the lumber was donated by Scarborough Lumber. The bridge was later replaced with a flatbed railroad car. In the distance, you can see a sandbag wall. It was erected two days after the bridge was built to protect it from flood waters running down the road. It was constructed by BCFD personnel and local residents.
This picture was taken from the other end of the bridge. |
