South Great Read Laurie! That scoot was "made for you" and you
definately look like you belong together. My 250 Morphous dosent have the
acceleration your "big" majesty has, but its fast enough for interstate and
normal driving anywhere. I havent done a mileage check as its still under 1000
miles and will probably improve with age/miles, but suspect its getting at
least 80mpg. My Japanese friend Makoto who visits me almost every year says the
Majesty and Morphous are very popular in and around Tokyo and Saitama City
where he works and lives.
I also dont know what I ever did without a
glove box and volumes of underseat storage, and its really nice to ride
something so quiet and 'automatic' every now and then. A lot of these new large
scooters have quite lengthy wheelbases and give a super smooth ride as well.
The one downside to my Morphous is its small sportbike type windshield. They
sell a tall aftermarket version, but even though I know this is a silly reason,
it kills the cool Buck Rogers space ship looks. Guess in this case, I'll trade
function for form since I dont take long trips on it. Keep up the great
stories! John Sharp

South Laurie, Thanks for the great story about you and your
Scooter. I ride a Bergman, and really do enjoy it. We have a Tidwater chapter
of WOW here, and i have no problem keeping up with the rest of the girls on
their BMW's, Harley's, etc. Plus the storage is GREAT!!!
I also own and
ride an antique scooter, a 1948 Cushman Step-thru, or Turtleback, as they were
nicknamed back then. So I am "scooter Spoiled" all the way around.
Thanks for the great story. Especially since I travel that Rte 13 route
on the weekends to our place on the Chowan River in Winton, right near the "big
bridge" after you pass Tarheel BBQ.
I will look forward to more of your
stories. And if you have the first Monday night of the month free, come join
"Tidewater Lady Cruisers". We meet at the Atlas on Greenbriar Parkway, we eat
at six, and have our meeting at seven. Carol Dail

Wednesday, July 16, 2008 To Concerned, Mongols MC are not
a problem. I am sure that they are great guys that love to ride and want to
ride with brothers. As long as you respect them they will respect you. I would
hope that you treated them well and welcomed them here also. And that you were
a good host.
Tuesday, July 15, 2008
Phil, Looking at your website. I
am not sure if you are aware of this or not. But I was in Boneshakers on
Saturday night when I was highly surprised to find 3 members of the Mongols MC
flying full colors? Just wanted to let you know that they were around and to
wonder if you think there would be issues with the other clubs that are
local. Concerned
Mongols MC members flying full colors, I wasn't aware any of
those folks were in the area, but then they aren't required to check in with
me. I would think they were just passing through and were curious about the
local hangouts, and if everyone was behaving I can't see where it matters.
Hopefully you welcomed them to the area and were a good host....
Thursday, July 03, 2008 I saw your congratulations to Mike
Imprevento, It's great to have people racing at Maxton. I've been running there
since 1997 and am on the board of directors. I think you may want to check the
class you have listed for him. I think it's probably mms/pg-3000-4 which stands
for modified partial streamlined / pushrod gas - 3000 (cc's)- 4 (stroke). I
know the classing can be confusing to newcomers to racing. I would be glad to
offer advice. I look forward to seeing you there. Jim Cannon
Friday, June 13, 2008 Biker eNews Trading Post Phil,
Bill Whitehurst was able to sell his bike on your site after the Pilot and
Craigslist failed to produce. I am so happy I was able to assist Mr.
Whitehurst, he was very kind to me when I was looking for my bike. He let me
ride his bike several times. I used my computer skills to help him and that
makes me feel good. Now he can take the cash and upgrade his Kaw 1500. Thanks
for the service you provide to the motorcycling community. Doug VB
Thursday, June 12, 2008 The Last Page Hey Phil; I
was very suprised and pleased to see your visit to my home featured in this
weeks Last Page, as I had no idea you were going to write about it. I always
love when we're able to get together and visit , talk bikes, and solve all the
world's problems. Strother cracked up with your wicked sense of humor stating
the old CL350 came with a black snake security system! She's still laughing!
You've really become a valued friend and I really appreciate your kind and
thoughtful words and observations in this and all of your articles. I know I
speak for many when I say I look forward each week to your website's
updates-news-features and I would REALLY miss it if you ever stopped! I know it
must be a lot of work holding down a 40+ hour/week job and still maintain the
effort to gather and put together all the work that keeps the BIKERENEWS fresh
EVERY week! Only a special and devoted (ie crazy) person would have the
character and staywithitness to commit to something like this. And I'm not even
adding the work at the radio program! Well, before your head gets too big for
your helmit, I just want to say thank you again for all you do for us
degenerate biker types, and I'm sure many feel this way. Thanks Phil! John
Wednesday, May 28, 2008 The Last Page I really enjoyed
reading "The Last Page". Yes, seeing those old bikes brings back fond memories
indeed. But you know what, as good as they were, the new bikes are much better.
Twenty years from now some middle aged dudes will be fondly recalling their old
R1s and Harleys. Keep up the great work. I will be listening Sunday. I might
not be able to call in, especially if the weather is good...but we are all
listening. Regards,Doug
Thursday, May 29, 2008 The Last Page Now you KNOW I'd
LOVE your thoughts in this weeks LAST PAGE, since we suffer from the same
illness. For me, another allure about the old classics is that they can be
kept, or made to look like they did the day they came into existance...
virtually forever. Beauty in humans and other living things is transient, but
restored or cared-for motorcycles (and just about all other vehicles) are
lasting time capsules to be enjoyed over and over again by the following
generations of industrial art lovers. As you've already concluded, Im a little
"out there" with machines, but I'd only admit this to you. The movie
"CHRISTINE" really made an impact on me with the movies concept that Christine
added in her own restoration "feeding on the love" that Arnie gave her. All
Arnie did was piddle around with this and that, and each day the car became
somehow more and more beautiful. Question is: Was it all really Arnies doing?
We know it wasnt. I've experienced the same phenomena when restoring bikes.
Wow! did I do all that last night? Well, maybe, but it didnt look this good
when I gave up and went to bed. What happened overnight? Elves? Most all of us
give names to and talk to our vehicles (I probably more than most) and maybe
the the whole IS actually more than just the sum of its parts, and these old
bikes (cars, tractors, trucks, riding mowers, boats, etc.) that have been in such
close proximity absorbing the affection of humans have developed a
consciousness. Well, gotta go. I think I'll go talk to my Black Bomber.

Wow, you come down from Ohio?? My family travels from NY
sometimes. Thanks for attending and I know I give preferential treatment to
your riders. The good shots on raceday are the ones on the back tire or with
lots of roost. Dean and Charlie know how to do both. They both were the friends

for all three of us, that we would not consider missing such an untimely event.
With Donnie's passing, it just gives all of us more appreciation of friends,

Tuesday, May 13, 2008 Hello, I am writing to make sure it's ok
for me to add your great site to my webpage. (
http://home.comcast.net/~bkier/site ) From what I read I assumed it would be ok
to link but I wanted to verify this.
I have a link called "Some Real
Clasics" (at the top of my page) and when clicked it gives Biker eNews credit
with a link to your site.
Man, I haven't been back to the Tidewater
area since I was in the Coast Guard (1965-1969) but I had a bike all the time
down there and just loved the area! At that time WGH was the big station (AM
Radio) and a guy named JJ Bowman was responsible for me getting into
broadcasting! We had the WGH Showmobile that we took all over the place for
live remote broadcasts...especially Virginia Beach. The Showmobile was set up
right on the beach...talk about great scenery! Ha Ha
My best riding
buddy who was with me on the Cutter Chock lived in Newport News, Philip Boykin
was his name but we lost contact back in '69. I bet a lot has changed since
then, but I hope to ride my bike there again. I'm celebrating my 41st year of
riding this year and hope to have at least 20 more! Bike gets too heavy to hold
up...I'll get a Trike!
Well, take care and if you see Phillip Floria.
PLEASE shake his hand for me....bless his heart for such a wonderful website!

Scooters on My Mind It's good to see such a well written, informative
article on scooters. Thank you. I have a Yamaha Majesty and a Suzuki Blvd s50.
I find myself riding the Majesty more because of the convenience of the
storage, twist and go between lights and it's so easy to keep clean. I enjoy
both bikes and though I thought I'd keep only one, I'm probably going keep
enjoying them both. Dick Sicard, Hampton

My Mind I've been riding since 1966, had/have many bikes, and my main
ride now is a Silver Yamamha Morphous. People flock around it every time I park
it somewhere and ask all kinds of questions. It sort of looks cross between a
1938 Buck Rogers spaceship and a wheeless jetski. Even my antique bikes dont
draw as much notice! Its smoooooth, comfortable, automatic trans, quiet, and
powerful enough that I've even been "accepted" to cruise with some of my
die-hard Harley friends! They get upset when we are all parked on the Jamestowm
ferry and the cage riders get out and stare at the Morphous! Also, when they
are all stopping for gas, I dont bother, and just go inside the store for
crackers and a cola! (80+ MPG) Im glad that you had the guts to bring up the
topic of scooters. Maybe we all could learn something from Europe and Asia
where gas has been $5 + of a long time. I dont care if people dont wave back to
me, or what they think when the see me on a scooter, and its their loss if they
are so macho that they dont feel Im a "real" biker. Im having great fun being
THE ONE WHOS REALLY DIFFERENT! John Sharp

Monday, March 17, 2008 The Last Page Motorcycle Mania Phil,
this 11.6 volt article was great; I can remember bump starting a few bikes in
years past but none in recent years. Now I know it won't work with present
machines thanks to you. Speaking of thanks, I thank you for the compliment you
gave me on air Sunday when you said you had two e-mails to read from a "friend"
in Va.Bch. I'm glad you consider me a friend. I particularly think it was fine
of you to answer my questions in the limited time the show ran. I missed the
first part of the show and did not know why it only ran for an hour till later
in the day when I found out you guys got pre-empted by NASCAR. I'm a NASCAR fan
as well as a bike enthusiast so I guess if Mikes show has to get bumped at
least it's for a worthy cause and not some dumb interior decorating show or
whatever.
Hey Phil, you answered both my questions in a very reasonable
and understanding manner, I never thought of the fact that the contact patch on
the large diameter tire would be made up for in length what it lacked in
width...dumb me.. Hey I'm part Polack so give me a break. Next Saturday my wife
and I plan on going over to HRHD to donate some blood and check out the bikes,
figure on getting over there around noon or little later. Let me know if you're
going to be there, maybe we could touch base in real time..... Steve in

Sometimes I'm so smart I impress myself;I was sort of stuck

Thursday night. A lot of what I do with the site is passing on information, as
honestly and as understandable as possible.
I was hoping that we would
have had more time on the air so the listeners, could have called in with their
thoughts on both the petcock and the contact patch questions. I was getting
pressed for time so I hope I said all of the right stuff.

Thursday, March 13, 2008 Dirt Drag Racing I appreciate
Mr. Brookman's commitment to rider safety in the 4 wheeler classes at Slades.
I'm glad to see the allowance of wheelie bars on 4 wheelers as a safety device.
There are 3 instances, during the last racing season, where 4 wheelers came
back over on the riders at the starting line, luckily no one was injured but it
could have easily gone the other way as these things are heavy and your spine
is exposed to their crushing forces if they come over onto you. Its difficult
to argue for the exclusion of a safety device that could keep someone out of a
wheel chair. Thanks Joe for allowing wheelie bars, I'm looking forward to
another great racing season. Mike Crutchfield #57 500-700 4 wheel class
Friday, February 15, 2008 The Last Page Hey Phil, As a
devout reader of the 'Last Page' I missed this one, "Willie's Bones & Being
PC". I was reading your latest 'Last Page' article which mentioned the purchase
of the PC 800 and had to go back in time and see what I missed. For a guy that
measures his rides in feet per second I was surprised to read that you are now
'Captain Tupperware'. Bikes that are different are definitely cool in my book.
Congrats, Phil! Cheers, John Heckman

I'm worthy of the title of Capt. Tupperware, but every day I do more California

Thursday, February 14, 2008 The Last Page Phil got it right.
He said all that I was thinking. The PC is a great bike....I rode one for 12
years before moving to an 05 ST1300 which I dearly love too. Thanks
Phil Mickey T
Nothing sounds better to a scribe than he got it right, but
then I figure I always have it right; at least in my perspective.
I
have see the PC running around for years and never gave it much thought. But
when Flo and I went hunting for something that we could ride comfortably
together, it was just by luck we happened on the PC. After using it most of the
week to commute on I have been satisfied that it was a good choice for the
task. All I have to do now is remember it does have cornering limits that come
way before mine.
My choice if I was going to buy a new bike would have
been between the ST1300 and the Yamaha FJR1300; I did give the Kawasaki a nod
until I read some disturbing stuff about their traction control. But in the end
I saved a lot of money; which is always good and got a nice motorcycle to boot.
Thanks for your comments it made my day. Phil

Monday, January 28, 2008 "On the Road" Thanks for writing
a great piece. My wife and I went to Richmond for the Lobby Day and I could not
believe the number of bills proposed. This one about the trailer hitch device

eyes on the vehicles (two wheel and four wheel) around them. John

Thanks for the comment, and I am glad
you enjoyed the piece. I always enjoy hearing feedback, either positive or
negative. I also want to say thanks for being concerned citizens and attending
Lobby Day. I wish that more folks would take the time to get involved in the

watching, and need to know that they are being observed. Of course the next
step is to hold them accountable come ELECTION DAY!!

Saturday, January 26, 2008 "Suzuki Frame Breaks" Some of the things
I noticed were the frame is CAST ALUMINUM [very brittle]. It's eery how both
sides of the frame, the breaks are almost identical. What needs to be done
is purchase a bunch of frames from bikes with simular production numbers and
have them stress tested and checked for stress cracking. I absolutley believe
the frame failed, wether the bike was being wheelied or not. The product
appears to not be fit for the purpose it was intended to be used for. Racing.
Good luck in your fight. Kim Young
Aluminum, whether its cast or billet, can be heat treated
to insure the part being made is fit for it's intended purpose. The cost of
buying and testing a number of frames could be rather costly. It's apparent
that some of these frames left the factory not completely heat treated or with
defects which were hidden in the inspection process. Either way Suzuki is
responsible for their products dangerous condition. This is one of those
times that lawyers and the court system are working for us, hopefully they will
be successful in the fight. Their success will guarantee us safer motorcycles
in the future, and perhaps the manufactures will develop a different attitude
about standing behind their products. Phil
Thursday, January 24, 2008 "Motorcycle Mania"
Phil, this bike I've got has beautiful chrome spoked wheels but they
are incredibly hard to clean, especially the hub area. Even though I don't have
real big hands I cant get my fingers down inside to clean the hub what with the
sprocket on one side and the disc brake on the other. Front wheel, almost as
hard down in at the hub. Now I know some will just say fire up the pressure
washer, hit it with some aerosol wheel cleaner and then blast it all off with
about 1800psi of water. I'm not sure if this is a good idea for the wheel
bearings etc.....so now,... because weather is so crummy I have no excuse to
put off one of my worst hunnydo's,...strip wall paper and repaint bathroom,
this gave me a good reason to buy a new "tool". A neat little "steam cleaning
machine" with little hose and scrubbing attachments. I realize hot steam might
not be great for wheel bearings either but the steam is very detrectable and if
not held in one place very long nothing actually gets too hot,....what do you
guys think of using this with some dilute cleaning solution, is there any kind
of a clear coat protectorate on the spokes or chrome that I would be screwing
up? Forty years ago when I was in Navy attached to VS-24 as a plane captain we
used to steam clean the whole darn airplane after it came back from it's
mission, that's another story for another time....hey, give me this answer if
you will in e-mail, we are leaving for western Pa. Sunday morning.... Steve
in VABch
Don't use a pressure washer on wheels or any other part of
the bike. S100 makes the strongest wheel cleaner I know, it will flat
remove brake dust and leave the wheels clean. Strip some rags down into 1
or 2 inch wide strips and use them to weave into places you cant get fingers,
or search out the auto parts stores for those little scrubbing brushes with
nylon bristles. Spray the S100 on the wheel and follow the directions. Use the
rags or brushes to scrub the stuff in and let it soak; you may want to wear
rubber gloves. A gentle stream of water from the garden hose will wash most of
the nasty stuff away. I used the S100 about every 4 or 5th washing, I use Wheel
Magic in-between, if you keep the bike clean the build up won't occur.
Steam no matter how well directed might not be in your bikes best interest. It
may accelerate the ageing of the chrome parts and the wheel bearing seal.
By the way we all have the big hands problem when it comes to working on or
just cleaning a motorcycle.
Tuesday, January 08, 2008 The Last Page Good advice about
the pressure washer, Phil! A few years ago a headstrong guy here at work
decided he was going to borrow a pressure washer from work and clean his new
Sportster. We all told him not to but he insisted on cleaning his bike with it
anyway. Next day he rides in and he has condensate on the glass inside the
speedo. Costly boo boo. Steelhorse sells some cleaning products by California
Custom which states they can cut cleaning time in half. I have been meaning to
get some of their Aluminum Deoxidizer for my Vintage Wing and Scrambler.
cheers, John Heckman
Wednesday, January 02, 2008 Dear Editor, Ms. Deanna
Lee-Reeses' letter, in reference to the rule change at Slades, is not based on
the facts. At the beginning of the 07 season, the rules were exactly the same
as the 06 year. The first race of the year was never finished because of the
number of 250 class dirt bikes and the double elimination rule. It took an hour
and a half to get thru the first round of 250 class dirt bikes. All 4 wheel
classes were single elimination during the 06 season, I was happy to see the
rule change take place as were the other 5 racers I know. All 6 of us raced
every race this past season and are very happy with the rule changes that were
made. Classes with 10 bikes or less are double elimination, more than 10 equals
single elimination.
Slades is heads-up racing, if you kids are not the
fastest, they shouldn't advance. Newtown offers bracket racing, the bike
doesn't have to be fast, just consistent. Sounds like Newtown would be
better suited to your family's racing desires but be prepared to pay
significantly more to race at Newtown. Mike Tuesday, January 01, 2008 Biker eNews First
Ride of the New Year Phil & Co. Just a quick note of thanks for the
Annual New Year's Day ride you folks put on today. It was a great time (of
course any time on a motorcycle is a great time). The weather really cooperated

It was especially
nice of Flo to go around and personally introduce herself to everyone there. It
was also cool that Mike made it out as I am sure he is a busy guy.

Sunday, December 16, 2007 Motorcycle Mania I
caught your show coming back from a family Christmas party this weekend (Dec
16th). I just wanted to tell you guys, as an MSF coach, I REALLY enjoyed the
show and appreciated the safe driving tips. Especially the lane information,
group riding, and going into a turn. You guys hit it right on the head and it's
great to hear riders such as yourselves getting the word out to other riders
about safety. I did want to mention one thing, I believe Phil was talking about
a headlight modulator, and I agree these are great attention getters, but I
thought you might want to make your listeners aware that if an unsuspecting car
driver sees this coming towards him/her at an intersection he/she may think you
are giving the universal signal to "pull out" or "go ahead" (lights flashing).
Just a thought. (As an aside, I always figure they are going to pull out in
front of me anyway.) I don't get your show here in Charlottesville but will
definitely be downloading your programs to listen to. Keep up the great work,
you guys are providing a really awesome service. Thanks, Gregg.

Tuesday, November 27, 2007 Muse from the Rest Area Well
said Gary, well said! Also the crew did a great job rebutting the article on

Sunday, November 25, 2007 Muse from the Rest Area the
only thing is, is that these outlaw clubs mess it up for everyone. They are
living in the past and think that they can do as they please and tell everyone
else in the biker world what they can or cant do or wear. Southern riders and
Renegades and now Outlaws in NVA are a blight on society. They are not fooling
anyone, they are the scum of the biker world and are not bikers but thugs on
bikes. I really do hope law enforcement comes down on them in such a way that
we will finally be rid of this vermin. Steve
Steve, I certainly
hope that you did not get the idea from my article that I endorse drug dealing

used a sensational headline that continued to emphasize the 1% stereotypes that
BIKERS continue to be painted with. Thanks for logging into Biker eNews, and
thanks for sending in your comments. I enjoy hearing from anyone who takes the
time to read one of my articles. Ride Safe. Gary, Muse From the Rest

Friday, November 23, 2007 Motorcyle Mania Hi
Phil!!! Just wanted to tell you I had a great time on Motorcycle Mania with you
guys...its always a fun time! Thanks for having me out there with you. I just
wanted to let you know that I am putting in a call for "All Women Riders" Last
year I pulled about 10 women together to do the Holiday Parade down at the
beach. We had a blast!!!! We all dressed up like Santa's little helpers..well I
called us Santa's little HO HO HO's and we dressed up our bikes and blew the
beach away!!! We had a great time and were definately the loudest group at the
beach. Well, the parade people came to my shop and asked us to come out again
this year. So I am asking for your help to spread the word to all women riders
to come out and show thier Christmas spirit. We are meeting at Diva Customs at
4pm to set up for the parade. The parade starts at 5:50pm. The date is
Saturday, December 1st. They can go to my website at
www.DivaCustoms.com for more info or
they can give us a call at 757-428-3482. I know that if I want to spread the
word, all I need to do is to let you know at Biker eNews! Thanks for the help
and looking forward to seeing ya again!!! Tami Walker
Wednesday, November 21 The Last Page Phil - excellent
piece on making good choices while riding. Thanks for the well-reasoned
article. Mike Miller
Wednesday, November 21 The Last Page Phil, Excellent
Last Page article. Having been injured in a motorcycle accident by some idiot
out-of-stater that ran a red light I know first hand the pain, surgery, months
of physical therapy, the worried loved ones, 2 months out of work, and the
never ending pain (14 inch titanium rod in my right tibia). It can happen to
any one of us at anytime. cheers, John Heckman
