It has been awhile since we made any entries to the Diary, but we finally have gotten back on track. Now that I'm off the night shift and we both have family matters set aside Estle and I are back to work with a fever. Of course sometimes old guys like us get a little confused with a fever and seem to lose stuff, or misplace it until we don't need it anymore. But we are trucking along even it it's a slow pace.

The exhaust system is a bit of a puzzle too; no matter how we tightened up the bolts it still hits the hanger on the right side. It just dawned on me that the hanger may be on the wrong side of the frame. Perhaps it should go on the inside with the bend facing out???

Anyway it was a very frustrating day; I managed to break a tap off just as I finished tapping the hole for the hose hanger. That's a very small 8x32 screw and the tap is now broke off in the swing arm. I just love a day when it all goes wrong.

We have finally gotten all of the engine mounting bolts in and tightened down. Our next encounter was with the rear brake system. Mechanical fronts coupled with hydraulic rear drums. There is a lot of power in the rear brake or will be once we get it hooked up and full of brake fluid.

All of the lines from the rear wheel cylinder to the tee are installed and tight. The Tee had to be removed and cleaned as well as receiving a coat of paint. While it was drying we attacked the master cylinder and its line….

Now I love a puzzle, but this one seems to be unsolvable. I still can't figure out how that line is supposed to run. Its pre bent, but it just doesn't fit. The front header pipe is in the way of clean installation. No matter how I turn it or place it; the header is in the way. After fooling with it for a couple of hours we went on to mount up the brake pedal and the master cylinder.

Now we discovered we are missing some spacers; so it will take a trip to the local Harley dealer to order them. Some where in my garage those spacers are waiting for us to find them after they're replaced; it just seems that no matter how well you bag and label every little thing, something always comes up missing.

Once we finish the rear brake system the major parts of the chassis should be finished.

Now it's time to work on the electrical systems and get them finished. Of course we are still hunting some missing parts. Somewhere between my garage and Estle's house is a Bendix carb. We have somehow misplaced it. We are also waiting on clamps to seal the manifold and of course the carb. We could fire up the engine before fall. We were hoping to do that this spring, but my turn on the night shift delayed that part of our schedule.

We still need to assemble the primary, add some oil lines, install the starter and generator along with the rest of the starting and charging circuits but all of that is rather easy to accomplish; if we don't run into any more missing bolts and parts.

Rear master cylinder, you can see our temporary spacers to get things lined up. Opps still missing a nut to hold the brake pedal on. The rod from the pedal to the master is the old one, the new one has been backordered for over a year now. It may be time to do some machine work and fab up a new one.
