Saturday 21 July 2007

We started early or at least I did this Saturday, I was out in the garage listening to the radio and jamming with the tunes and working up a storm. OK, maybe it was just a little dust cloud…

Some how with a little luck I managed to figure out the correct routing for the brake line from the master cylinder to the tee; it was strange how it went behind the pedal mounting plate and crossed over under the engine. I was a lot happier with this than what looked like leaving it exposed and vulnerable. Now a little DOT 5 and the rear brakes will be finished.

Your can see the brake line disappearing under the engine, just behind the pedal push rod and boot.

The new push rod is backordered, so this one may have to cleaned up and painted for use until the new one arrives.

The brake line comes up between the pedal bracket and the master cylinder. The black square is the attachment point for the running boards.

Here you can see the washer stack we used as a temporary spacer to get everything lined up. Hampton Roads Harley-Davidson promised we would have the spacers by Thursday. All that's left is some DOT 5 brake fluid and a little bleeding and we will have rear brakes.

The tee on the opposite side of the engine. The brake line from the master cylinder emerging from under the engine.

We are still waiting on the front brake cable, along with a lot of other parts to push the project along. We have a long list of little items which need to be taken care of but all of them need something or other to complete them. We also finished up the top motor mount and now the engine is securely fastened into the frame.

Estle and I went off on a mission today to find some of the spacers we need to complete the bolting up of the rear master cylinder. We made a trip to one of Estle's favorite places, Hampton Roads Harley Davidson. To him it's a big, very big candy store. Standing at the parts counter we discovered almost everything we asked for was discontinued. We walked out after having spent a whopping 42 cents on one nut. The only spacers we were able to get were for the master cylinder and they won't be here until Thursday.

Those other spacers we need will be custom made by some friends of mine who live to make parts for me. Especially difficult ones like spacers.

We did managed to locate some missing parts, they weren't actually missing they were in the cleaning tank and had been in there for over a year. At least they were clean.

I also managed to find a bracket which we need to install now; it supports the oil tank and the clutch cable. It's a good thing we have to remove the oil tank and battery box anyway. That will allow me some room to get in there with a tap and clean out the holes for the bracket and bolt it in.

We spent a lot of time today in the service manual looking over the hose routing. Next Saturday we will pipe up all of the oil lines and hopefully, if the parts come in, install the inner primary and all of the gear that goes inside it. We are waiting for the bearing that sits in the inner primary cover and supports the transmission's main shaft. The old bearing looks to have seen better days. That is the one part which is holding up getting the primary completed.

Tune in next week when we get hosed….
