Saturday we made more progress on the Shovelhead Project.
The engine's gear train is now installed; the cam pinion, oil pump drive as
well as the oil pump, breather gear, and distributor or circuit breaker gear as
Harley calls it as well as the idler gear are all in place and timed. We also
managed to find enough time to clean the other piston. I started to end gap the
rings when we discovered they were not the same rings as the ones that came off
the pistons.
TRW made the .020 over pistons and it seems their rings
are a tad thicker than those that originally came on the Harley engine. Now we
either have to locate the correct rings, or replace the pistons. You never know
what you will find inside an engine. One good thing, the rings that I took off
of the pistons are fairly new with only 400 miles on them. They can be used
again if we have to.
Estle caught me in a mad frenzy of cleaning up and moving
stuff around when he arrived. The new press was moved into its new nook. I made
that space by scraping one of the file cabinets I had. Now I'm down to one and
it's full of parts.
Some time around 1400 on Saturday we took a quick trip
over to Hampton Roads Harley Davidson to get the transmission end cover gasket
and some woodruff keys for the crank and oil pump. Those little devils are hard
to keep up with.
We rolled up to HRHD to find the parking lot full of
cars
. They were having a drawing for a new Road King . Ok so it was
raining a little and the event was outside; the band sounded pretty good from
the parking lot. Estle and I were in a hurry and didn't go back there to hustle
up on the free food. After all we had an engine to build. |
