The first race of the season was
on Sunday, April 15th. As usual for the first one of the year, the turnout was
huge. There were 141 registered racers in 19 classes. It was breezy most of the
day but sunny and warm. That fine sand can sure blow around.
Part of
the track staff didn't return from last year. There were new faces working the
scoring in the tower. It's not an easy job and there were some errors, most not
even the tower staff's fault. Duplicate numbers, and riders not paying
attention to when they should race; made the first two rounds run way late.
We didn't get the third round started until after 5:30. With so many
bikes there was no way we could finish before dark. When the race was called
because of darkness; coins had to be flipped to find the winners in several
classes. It would have been nice if there was a loud speaker to announce what
was going on. It didn't look like some of the riders still in it knew what was
taking place. A couple of people were not happy with the way the finish was
decided. In the end, what was fair to some was foul to others.
Todd
Leatherman was back on the track on Blue in the Top Fuel A class. That bike
makes the ground shake and the crowd go wild when it makes a pass. Todd had
some difficulty with the new bike and Dan Fowler took the win on his Kawasaki.
Jason Plummer had a 4.05 second pass and took first in the Top Fuel B
class.
I wish we had counted how many chains came off and how many
bikes didn't show to the starting line when they were called!! I was happy to
see so many girls competing with several taking a win!!
Rannings
Racing had another interesting day.
The Top Fuel B bike wasn't set up
to be competitive, then had a broken pipe and missed a bi round to put us out
of contention. They did allow a test pass to be sure everything was corrected.
The 500, V6 was running great until it spit out a plume of white smoke
at the end of round three. We think it was just the crank seal but haven't
investigated it yet.
In the Harley Class, Jesse and Jacob each had one
loss when the 96 decided to quit. We still need to figure out what was wrong
with the Harley
. That gave Jacob the win and Jesse second.
The
next race is May 20 with May 27 as the rain date. Come on out and join the fun
