Sunday, August 12th was race day. I have had major computer problems at work this week and I certainly don't have time to do my report at home. As I started writing this today, I hadn't even looked at the digital pictures that I took!! The weather man provided a gorgeous day for us. You have to love a weekend in August that hardly makes it into the 90's!! There was a decent crowd on hand for the day. There were 18 classes with 52 4 wheelers, 61 2 wheelers and plenty of spectators. Only 2 classes had over 10 and had to have the single elimination. There were two bad mishaps during the day. Unfortunately, we had a nasty spill in the 4 wheel extreme class. Lavar Charity was making a bye run, lost control and flipped his bike, #310. I wasn't at track side when it happened but saw the back wheels in the air while the bike upside down. He was transported by ambulance and when I talked with his grandfather Sunday night, they were headed to Williamsburg Hospital for a second opinion. The only update I had was that he had a concussion. I hope there were no more serious injuries and that his bike can be repaired before the next race. Lavar is one of the nicest people, great to talk to and always a wide smile. Our thoughts are with him. The second bad deal was when Vance Cowling's Top Fuel B Bike blew the motor with Doug Allen riding it. From our vantage point it looked like the carburetor blew off!! I have been asked to spread the word about a great event in September. The Fowlers are going to have a Family Fun Day at the spread in Courtland on the 23rd. The place opens at 8 am with the fun starting at noon. For any Top Fuel, Pro Gas and Extreme 4 Wheel the track will be at 250'. All other 2 Wheel and 4 Wheel will compete at 300'. There will also be a Slow Race, Wheelie Contest, Horseshoe Contest and Egg Toss. For any questions, you can reach Dan at 757-653-2758 or John at 757-653-0426. They had a similar event a couple of years ago and we really enjoyed it. For those of you bothered by the single elimination, this is the place for you.
I really have a great collection of pictures this time so I have added more than usual. I also had to post one as a tribute to a good friend of mine, Blaine. He passed away from a heart attack on Monday. The worst thing about living so far from my hometown - 10 hours - is that I miss some events that I would really like to attend. You can tell by the picture he was a motorcycle enthusiast and he was also a disabled veteran. One heck of a guy!!
The next race at Slade's is September 16th with the 23rd as a rain date. So it better not be rained out and spoil our fun at Dan's place!!
