Sunday, October 25, 2009 The final
race of the season ran on the rain date. The original date scheduled was
October 18. The race was postponed on Thursday because of the forecasted 4 days
of cold rain and a possible Nor'easter whipping in on Sunday. Rain dates are
notorious for a poor turnout; but there was a better crowd than expected. It
was a chilly day with little sunshine and too much breeze. I guess since it was
the last race, folks decided to come out.
We had 127 registered riders
in 18 different classes. There were very few bikes competing in the top 3
classes. While there were only 2 in Top Fuel A, 1 in Top Fuel B and 3 in the
Pro Gas, the Pushrod (mostly Harley) Class had 11 and had to succumb to single
elimination losses. There were some pretty ticked off riders over that call.
But you know how rules are!!
The presence of John Fowler for the day
was a huge relief. He is now on crutches and getting around a little bit. We
continue to wish him the best for a speedy recovery. Riding the 4 wheeler as
the tow back bike had him grinning ear to ear. The Fowler Team had a pretty
good show with 1st for Dan Fowler, 2nd for Roma Fowler in the Pro Gas and 1st
in the 501-600 by Danny Fowler.
A big thank you to John Hudson and
crew for the great job of trimming the lower branches on all of those glorious
trees. The top of our trailers and campers thank you as well!!
Rannings Racing had an excellent day with plenty of friends on hand to cheer us
and we took several trophies home. The day was not without adversity though.
There was no competition for Jesse in his second race day on the Top Fuel B
bike and the "Monster" Harley, number 96 broke some clutch plates and had to be
worked on feverishly to be ready for the next round. We aren't impressed with
the way new clutches are made and have more than our share of problems with
them. It seemed that the new plates made the bike shear the shaft at the
starting line of the final round for first and second place. We could have
easily won but had to settle for second. Jacob was out in the second round of
competition since it was single elimination and the shifter hung up while
racing against his brother. Jesse also scored another win in the 351-500 class
on the CR500. Despite racing in the "bigger" classes, we still get great
satisfaction from beating all the competition in this class.
For the
first place listing in the 4 wheel 351-450 class, they had 555 as the winner
but I didn't have a 555 on the sign up sheet. My guess is that Jamie Atkins
took first in both classes.
I hope you enjoy the variety of pictures I
selected. It was great to see Paula and Kay from the old "Williams Staff" that
used to staff the races. Paula's son Zach helps Paul with the Top Fuel B bike
#42.
I'm not sure what I will write about to keep you entertained over
the winter. Next month will be all about the 18th Annual Vets Run sponsored by
the First Capitol Chapter of ABATE of Virginia. I have helped with this event
for a couple of years and it's very rewarding. There is a flier on the Biker
eNews Calendar if you are interested in riding and/or showing a bike or car.
There's a phone number for Gene Spare if you can donate time, food or money to
help make the event a success.
They usually raise all the funds from
the Rodeo in August. The location was supposed to be Rocky Hock Campground. One
week before the event, Rocky Hock wanted an additional $100.00!! That is like
taking money/food out of the hands of our veterans. They had to cancel the
Rodeo. If you can help in any way or just want to make the ride or show, it is
a fantastic event. The veterans are the judges for the car and bike show. If
you do make it, I'll be working in the food tent, having a blast!!
As
always, as soon as I have information about next year's schedule, I'll pass it
on. Don't forget to vote on Nov. 3 and have a great off season.
