The first race of the season was on Sunday, April 19th. It was a
great turnout as far as spectators. I was kind of surprised there weren't more
racers. The weather was great in the morning but turned weird in the afternoon.
It was like the clouds had decided to settle in low. It never did rain and we
were finished, packed up and heading home by 6:30 pm.
There were 19
classes with 123 registered riders. There were only 2 classes that were single
elimination. I'm not sure how we ended up with a ?? class. It's kind of
601-1100 but there were some conversations about different tire sizes and
breaking them into two different classes. So even once racing started it was
still listed as the ?? class. It looks like they are calling the Hog Gas Class
the Pushrod Class this year.
Fowler and Fowler Racing had a fantastic
day. In the Pro Gas Class, Dan made his fastest pass yet in the second round
with a 430. He placed first in the Pro Gas, Joseph Fowler placed second in the
?? class, Danny Fowler placed first in the 351-500 class and Cameron Fowler
placed second in the 50-60 Mini class. You could tell they were having a lot of
fun too!!
Rannings Racing had our share of difficulty. The Honda CR500
just didn't want to run right all day. They changed fuel mixture and jets to
try to correct it with no luck. The Top Fuel B bike won one round because Jason
Plummer red lighted. But it was not hooking up to the track properly. In the
Pushrod/Hog Gas Class, we were having a great day until the last round. Jacob's
bike, #66 did not sound right and he decided not to take a chance. Thank
goodness it was only a bolt that had sucked in and scored the piston instead of
a major failure like last year!! The "Monster" bike, Jesse's #96 broke an oil
line and it was a scramble to get it fixed in time for the next round!! Things
got pretty hectic.
I have also included some pictures from the test
and tune we went to down at Morgan's Corner, NC on March 28th. It is a new drag
track next to the motorcross track. The distance is 300 feet with 400 feet of
shut down. The lanes are wide enough for trucks to race too. He has a pro tree
and was working on getting all the bugs out that first day. They had one this
past weekend on the 25th but we didn't go to it. Their next event is on May
23rd. He may only do test and tune and not actual racing. He wasn't sure how
things would go since he had never done this type of racing before.
It
was a great opportunity for us to make sure our bikes were ready for the first
race at Slade's. We had problems with both Harleys that needed repair back at
the garage. There was a scary incident most of you have heard about by now. Two
Extreme 4 wheelers were competing when something went wrong on David Keys bike.
He ended up barrel rolling in the air, above the other competitor, Trell Allen
who ducked, then landed with the bike on top of his legs. He was airlifted to
Norfolk General for a couple of days. We were glad to see him at Slade's with a
nice little neck brace on but heeling just fine.
The next race is May
19th and we hope to see you out there!!
