First race of the season, YEE HAW!!!!!!!! What a day. Sunday April 22 was the opening race for Slade's Park with a new Promoter and Track Staff. To say the turnout was huge would almost be an understatement. The first and last race are always the biggest of the season but this one was huge. The track was actually crowded when we pulled in at 9:30 AM.

The new promoter isn't really new to the track. Joe Brookman had been partners with Paul Williams and took a couple of years off. His new partner, Donnie Cooper, has been part of the track staff all along. The crew in registration and manning the tower were new faces. One big change in the rules was one bike in one class. You pick what class you are going to run in and can't run the same bike in 2 or 3 different classes. You would have thought that would help make things faster but that was not the case. They also changed it to 2 loss elimination for the 4 Wheel classes.

The Practice Crowd

I could make quite a list of the pros and cons of the day. We knew it would be different than what we were accustomed to. We had told the boys the day before to just go with the flow and have fun.

The cons:

  1. Registration wasn't cut off until well after Noon
  2. Racing didn't even start until after 1:30
  3. It took a long time to groom the track and water between rounds
  4. There were too many rookies that didn't have the front wheel set up to trigger the timing light, it took many of them way too long to stage
  5. The track and the roads were extremely dusty
  6. There were the same numbers on bikes in the same class
  7. Round three wasn't even finished by 6 PM, there was no way we could finish before dark
  8. When it was obvious we wouldn't be able to finish, they had people making their bye runs anyway, wasting more time
  9. They called two bikes to the line and then called the race instead of just letting them run and then calling it

The Pros:

  1. There was a huge crowd of riders and spectators
  2. The weather was absolutely gorgeous
  3. The track was very straight and in good shape, except being dry
  4. We had a lot of fun and our bikes ran great
  5. The track crew seemed to do the best they could considering the crowd
  6. There was a huge crowd and the weather was gorgeous

The day ended with several classes to be decided with a coin toss or straws drawn. Since it was already 8:30 when we were packed and ready to leave, I didn't stay around to get the final results to post. Brian Moody, #10 placed first in the Top Fuel Class. They made a pass that was possibly the fastest in the history of the track, 3.8 seconds.

I have a nice variety of pictures to share with you. It was great to see so many young kids out there gaining some experience. The little ones with the training wheels are adorable. They get more and more confident each race. Then the following year the extra wheels are gone!!

The next race is May 20th with a rain date of May 27th. Come on out and join the craziness!!
